Hi!
Glad to hear the show's coming back on this month.
Read a great editorial by
Molly Ivins re: the economy today. It's her latest and is full of statistics showing how the middle/working classes are being hurt by Bush's policies and, also, criticizing the Democrats who voted for Bush's horrible bankruptcy law. I've heard that most people who go bankrupt do so because of medical bills. How are they suppose to pay for health care once they've lost everything they have? And why not stop the darned credit card companies from pushing everyone to get credit cards and spend spend spend? On top of it all, the GOP/Bush want budget cuts for education, Medicaid, etc. and we all know they'll want to increase tax cuts for the rich even more.
I don't understand why so many Democrats, moderates, or even the traditional conservatives refuse to stand up to Bush. They are supposed to be working for us not the corporations. My Poli-Sci 101 professor said that the first thing our Senators/Reps, etc. start thinking about after an election is how to get re-elected. The only thing we can do is to put pressure on our representatives, so they know they won't get our votes if they vote for the special interests instead of the way we want them to.
Molly's latest column/archives can be found on the Creator's Syndicate
Saw an interesting column by Paul Krugman dealing with intellectuals/conservatives at universities. (Republicans sel-select at universities). This is dealing with the GOP claim that conservatives are under-represented in elite university faculties. It turns out that it's in hard sciences/math as well as in social sciences, etc. The fact is that Democrats/Liberals are more interested in pursuing academic careers and Republicans/Conservatives are more interested in secular fields. The column also says that Republicans outnumber Democrats 4-1 in the military. (Gee, is this why they all seem to be war hawks?)
One of the things he says is that the GOP used to be considered the party of ideas, but has become the party of theocracy-true. Teddy Roosevelt was a progressive Republican-a Liberal. Even Eisenhower was light years away from "W".
There's also mention of the conservative's current disdain for science. Apparently, these folks who don't have any scientific background think they know better than people with degrees/years of study. Somehow, I'd rather trust the opinions of an archaelogist than some guy getting on his soapbox about "the rapture" and all their other ridiculous ideas. Anyway, the last sentence pretty much says it all-"It shouldn't be surprising that scholars have returned the favor by losing respect for the Republican Party."
Me, too, but then I voted for the intellectual instead of the good ol' boy.
