Coffee Table

More non stop religon in the news. I haven't much to say about it. I believe in freedom of religon and keeping it out of government to help it stay that way. I'm not a catholic so I haven't much to say. They can do what they want, I have little interest. Time to give you a chance to discuss what's important to you. The coffee is hot. Sit down and to quote Mr. S. : Be who you are, say what you feel. Those that mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind.

Speaking of religion-got an interview link re: selection of Benedict XVI as Pope. This was on "Democracy Now" hosted by Amy Goodman (375 LINK TV)-probably the best news show out there (they report the news the so called liberal media are afraid or unwilling to report).

I have mixed feelings about this choice. He was in Hitler's Youth even if he did desert the army and spend time in a POW camp. That's not going to sit too well with Jewish people and could cause a rift in relations between the Jewish and Catholic religious leaders. Also, it's a slap in the face to the people of Latin America who comprise over half of the world's Catholics. It might have been nice to have a Black Pope, too, so why not the Nigerian Cardinal?
Benedict is too conservative re: women in the Church, gays, married priests, birth control, etc. Even more Catholics/ priests will probably leave the Church and go where? To fundamentalist churches that support Bush and the neo cons, probably. That's not a good thing. On the plus side, he's pro-peace, so he will probably criticize Bush's oil war.

I'm wondering what, if anything, he's going to do with problems re: child abuse and molestation by priests.

Guess we'll see.

I'm not awfully hopeful with his conservative views, but one never knows.

Read a great editorial by Paul Krugman-"Republicans self-select at universities". This deals with the issue of the conservatives whining about how they are under-represented on the faculties of elite universities.
The fact is that Republicans and conservatives choose to be in the secular fields not the academic ones. They also outnumber the Democrats 4-1 in the military. Is this why the GOP voters are such war hawks? The column says that the GOP which used to be the party of ideas has become the party of theocracy. Boy, is that one ever true.
The last part talks about the current conservative disdain for science, like as if these folks that are jumping up and down on their soapboxes about "the rapture", etc. know more than anthropologists, archeologists, etc. with degrees and years of study. The last sentence says that "It shouldn't be surprising that scholsrs have returned the favor by losing respect for the Republican Party."
I agree, but then I voted for the intellectual instead of the "good ol' boy".
